该流域气候温和,水量充沛,水面平缓,含砂量小,对充分开发这一地区的航运具有天然的优越条件。流域内有耕地700多万亩,矿藏资源十分丰富,工矿企业较发达,有国家最大的有色金属冶炼工程铜基地及腹地内的建材轻工。原材料及销售地大部分在长江流域各省、市地区,利用水运的条件十分优越。
流域梯级开发后,将建成一条长340km通航千吨级驳船的航道和另一条长50km通航300吨级驳船的航道,并与长江、淮河水系相互贯通形成一个江河直达的上游水路运输网。同时也为沿江各县市扩大直流灌溉创造有利条件。对促进沿河地区的工农业发展具有重要的作用,社会和经济效益十分显著。
